Kungspassagen – A Green Office for Well-being

Commisioner: Castellum
Landscape Architects: Tyréns
Designers: Broberg & Ridderstråle, Thomas Bernstrand
Completion: 2022

Situated on a rooftop terrace with one of Uppsala's best views, the architects at Stockholm-based practice Tyréns have created a varied outdoor environment for Castellum, the building’s leasing agents. The rooftop site was developed as a place where office workers can take breaks, hold meetings and work under the open sky. One of the architects’ directives was creating functional outdoor spaces where the workers would be protected from the elements.

Protection from rain and sun is provided by Nola’s Akalla pergola, installed with both open and closed sections. The pergola also provides a place for climbing plants as it frames the space and gives the environment a park-like atmosphere. Both the property owner and the architects wanted to install furniture and outdoor products that would be maintenance-free, so the steel, jatoba wood and sioo:x impregnated oak in Akalla’s construction made it a good option.

“We are incredibly proud of the rooftop terrace, which truly adds value that all tenants can enjoy. The space is both relaxing and energising," says Theresa Söderlund, Project Executive at Castellum.

The Parco furniture group can also be seen on Kungspassagen’s roof terrace, which office workers will use during down-time, as well as for work meetings. The generous Korg armchairs, with their soft cushions and enveloping shape, will promote rest and relaxation. The Kajen sun lounger and footstool are also present, ready for those who want to soak up the sun or take a short siesta in the shade. Overall, the products create a well-functioning outdoor workplace, while also meeting the requirements set by the building's high environmental standards.

Castellum encourage people to spend time outside, as research clearly shows that time outdoors contributes to well-being. Accordingly, the building is constructed in line with the Miljöbyggnad Gold and WELL Building Standard, both of which encourage social- and health-promoting aspects. In addition to workplaces, the rooftop terrace includes an outdoor gym, an events venue, a boules court and places to relax and unwind in.
